Live A pH Miracle Lifestyle

Hey friends. Jeanie & I just returned from  boring do nothin but workin out  vacation, eating/drinking good, no stress from law office, almost forgot how  great it felt to be in great shape. Decided to attempt to defy age a bit so I'm  back on 2 workouts per day before & after work & feeling like the good old days.  I encourage all of you to do same thing! Only have 1 body & life is way too  short! Workin on getting into fighting shape again this morning so I can start  training again whether police or others, martial arts or just civilian hand to  hand combat. See me smiling!?

I share this with you because when I see you next it will encourage me  to keep my published word & you will hold me responsible as I would you if you  asked. The Process

The source of pristine deep sea water

Destiny sources its 100% pure Hawaii deep sea water from NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority), which draws its water from depths of over 3000 feet in the pacific ocean just off the coast of Kona, located on the big Island of Hawaii. Ocean Water Temperature


Most of the solar radiation (light and heat) that penetrates the ocean is absorbed in theTemperature of Ocean Water first twenty yards of water. Waves and turbulence mix this heat downward quickly. The surface layer of the ocean is mixed from the top to the bottom of that layer. The temperature of the surface waters varies with latitude. The polar seas can be as cold as -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 degrees Fahrenheit) while the Persian Gulf can be as warm as 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit). The normal temperature of the ocean surface waters is about 17 degrees Celsius (62.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

There is a boundary between surface waters of the ocean and deeper layers that are not mixed. The boundary begins about 100-400 yards and extends several hundred of yards downward from there. This boundary region, where there is a rapid decrease of temperature, is called the thermocline. Ninety percent of the total volume of ocean is found below the thermocline in the deep ocean. Here, temperatures approach freezing. So even though surface waters can be a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius, the majority of our ocean water has a temperature between 0-3 degrees Celsius (32-37.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

The density of ocean water continuously increases with decreasing temperature until the water freezes. Ocean water, with an average salinity of 35 psu, freezes at -1.94 degrees Celsius (28.5 degrees Fahrenheit). Near the polar latitudes, ocean water can reach these low temperatures and freeze. Dissolved salts in the water tend to be rejected by the forming ice so that sea ice is only about 1 % salt. An interesting tidbit for those of you interested in survival tactics - because of the lessened amount of salt, melted sea ice would be fit to drink even if sea water is not! Sea ice formation at high latitudes ultimately drives circulation of the deep waters of the ocean.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Caused by Increased Acidity From Increased Acidic Food and Supplements


When the small intestine is clear of bacteria, yeast, mold, enzymes, probiotics, antibiotics and undigested food, then the normal healthy process of food transformation can take place creating healthy strong stem cells that will then become healthy strong red blood cells and eventually healthy strong body cells.

The following article supports my research that bacteria is always present in inflammatory and degenerative conditions. This is the result of the break down of food cells and/or body cells. The most important thing to understand here is that bacteria is a symptom of degeneration NOT the cause. The key to a healthy, strong and fit body is by maintaining the alkaline design of the body. The small and large intestine should always be alkaline at a pH of 8.4.

Using bacteria or enzymes to break down food ignores the fact that food breaks down from the inside out NOT the outside in. This means as the teeth break the membranes of the food the food cells will unravel or digest or liquidfy on their own and need no additional digestive help. It is important to understand that the entire digestive system is designed to alkalize the food we ingest NOT digest that food. To support the alkaline design of the body one must eat foods that go to liquid and are alkaline, such as low sugar fruit and vegetables.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Common Gastrointestinal Disorder Linked to Bacterial Overgrowth, Food Poisoning

ScienceDaily (May 13, 2011) — Cedars-Sinai researchers have reported two advances in the understanding of irritable bowel syndrome, the most common gastrointestinal disorder in the United States, affecting an estimated 30 million people.


One study provides further evidence that IBS is linked to an overgrowth of bacteria in the gut. In a separate study, a mathematical model reveals the disease's link to food poisoning and shows that military personnel are at a much higher risk for the disorder than the rest of the population.

"The better we understand this disease, which affects millions of Americans, the more tools we will have for fighting it," said Mark Pimentel, MD, director of the Cedars-Sinai GI Motility Program and a primary investigator on the studies. "Patients with this condition suffer serious quality of life issues. It's a disease that is frequently misunderstood and difficult for people to talk about, but it's important for the medical community to understand the causes of the disease so we can develop the most effective treatments possible."

The findings were reported at Digestive Disease Week, the world's largest gathering of physicians and researchers in gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery. The May 7-10 conference occurred in Chicago. IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in the United States, affecting more than 20 percent of the population. Doctors commonly categorize patients with a "constipation predominant" condition, a "diarrhea-predominant" condition, or an alternating pattern of diarrhea and constipation. These patients also often experience abdominal pain or cramps, excess gas or bloating, and visible abdominal distension.

In collaboration with researchers at Sismanogleion General Hospital in Athens, Greece, and at the University of Athens, scientists looked at small bowel cultures to confirm the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth -- or SIBO -- in patients with IBS. Previous studies have indicated that bacteria have a role in the disease, including breath tests finding methane (a byproduct of bacterial fermentation in the gut), as well as the disease responding to antibiotics. In this study, 320 patients underwent an endoscopy of their upper GI tract, from which a small bowel culture was cultivated. Of those patients with IBS, 37.5 percent were positive for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, compared to fewer than 10 percent of those who did not have the disorder . The overgrowth was more prevalent in those with the diarrhea-predominant version of the disease. Researchers also found more different kinds of bacteria in IBS patients.

In a separate study, using a mathematical model, researchers concluded that food poisoning -- gastroenteritis -- may account for the majority of irritable bowel syndrome cases. Further, it predicts a greater incidence of the disease for populations at a higher risk of these kinds of infections, such as military personnel. The study was based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and other research studies. The model projects that 9 percent of those with a genetic predisposition would contract IBS after 10 years. However, among high risk groups such as deployed military, 9 percent of that population would develop the disease in a six month time frame.

"While everyone understands that our troops encounter great danger and difficult conditions while serving their country, this study reminds us that we need to pay greater attention to the dietary woes and digestive upsets that long have been the subject of wry discussion among overseas forces," Pimentel said of the study results.

Emotions Cause Acidity That Leads To Sickness and Disease


Question: Can negative emotions affect the body’s pH? Can negative emotions affect our bodies’ health?

Dr. Robert O. Young: My of theory there being only one sickness and only one disease not only considers how your diet affects your physiology but also how your psychology affects your physiology. Your mental state is so critical. Your mental state, in many ways, if it’s negative, can create more metabolic acids than the food that you’re eating. In fact, you can create two or three times more metabolic acids from your thoughts, your mental state, then from ingesting acidic foods, such as dairy or animal protein. So your thoughts are critical. Your thoughts or words do become matter, and can affect your physiology in a negative or positive way. And the way your thoughts become biology is as follows: when you have a thought, that thought requires energy for the brain cells to produce that thought. As you carry on with a that thought that are having you are using energy, and when you are using energy you produce a biological waste product called, acid. If the metabolic acids from your thoughts are not properly eliminated through the four channels of elimination of, urination, perspiration, respiration or defecation, then your acids from your thoughts are moved out into your fatty tissues and connective tissues. This leads to all sorts of symtomologies such as lupus, fibromyalgia, arthritis, muscle pain, fatigue, tiredness, obesity, cancerous breasts, cancerous prostate, indigestion, acid reflux, heart burn, heart attacks, and the list goes on and on. For example let's say you are doing sadness or depression. And you are looping a negative experience in your head. Let's say you are constantly thinking about it, it’s always on your mind, you are worried about what you are thinking. You might say you are feeling emotional. Emotions are "energy in motion." When you see someone that’s emotional, they are energetic, either in a positive or negative way. And if they are energetic, they are "energy in motion." They are producing metabolic acids at a high rate. The rate of acid production is greater than someone who’s jogging or working out. So, your thoughts become biology or metabolic acid s that can make you sick, tired and fat. When you start producing acids with your thoughts this will activate the alkaline-buffering system to neutralize these acids. If these acids are not buffered and/or eliminated, they can create serious health challenges in your body. Positive emotions, such as love, peace, hope, faith, and forgiveness, can all be alkalizing to the blood and tissues. The negative emotions of anger, resentment, and fear - are the most powerful and acidifying of all emotions. The fear of the unknown is probably the most powerful and acidic of them all. Fear is so devastating to the body, even if you’re on an alkaline diet, overcoming a serious health challenge is practically impossible. You might think that The pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet isn't working? It’s always, what else am I not doing? How come I feel the way that I’m feeling? I’m eating the right way? I’m drinking the right water? I can’t seem to have the type of health and energy that I’m seeking? The reason why? You are being consumed by your negative acidic thoughts. People have “thought attacks” NOT "heart attacks." There are published studies showing that over 80% of all heart attacks are emotionally triggered. People don’t die of a heart attack, they die of a thought attack, that leads to the heart attack.

Question: So is it fair to say that negative emotions can affect the way a person feels and heals, if a person is overwhelmed with negative emotions, do they have a fair chance of healing from a degenerative disease, like heart disease, cancer—

Dr. Young: When you are in a negative emotion state, it is just about impossible to heal your serious degenerative condition. But, I will say this: if you are willing to commit to change and begin the process, even if you are not completely out of your state of fear, anger, or depression you will begin to alkalize and put more life and energy into your body. When you start feeling better, you know what happens? You start thinking better. When you start thinking better, you start doing better. So, you don’t have to have your emotions under control in order to start losing weight, to start feeling better, because when you start the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet program, you are making a conscious decision to try to do a little better. And, when you get on this healing path that leads back to the house of health, the pH miracle road that leads to the house of health, this gradual process—you start having those little pH miracles, you start feeling better and you start thinking better. And, when you start feeling better and thinking better — all of a sudden, you forget that you are depressed. You forget that you are angry, you forget that you are fearful, you forget what you were fearful about in the first place about, because you feel so good. Question : If a person is eating 100% alkaline diet and is still overwhelmed by negative emotions, can their body fluids stay alkaline? Can these negative emotions overwhelm a 100% alkaline diet?

Dr. Young: If you’re eating an alkaline diet and you’re overwhelmed with negative emotions, thank God you’re eating an alkaline diet or you’d be dead. Your acidic emotions will kill you. But the alkaline diet is the saving grace of all this and the hope that you can hang on and be healthy physically and mentally. You can live without food for forty days, you can live without water for four days, you can live without air for about four minutes, but you cannot live without hope for more than a second. You see, hope is the key, and that’s what the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet will do for you - give you hope. Question: Do emotions have a stronger effect to create body acidity than foods?

Dr. Young: Absolutely! As I have mentioned earlier, your emotions are energy in motion. And when you are consuming energy in your emotions you produce biological waste products called acid. When I have a client that’s in negative acid forming emotions, all the body fluids, including the blood will show a decline in the pH even if this person has been eating an alkaline diet. In order to buffer the acid forming emotions the client will have to hyper-alkalize the blood and then tissues to bring the body back into alkaline balance. When the client is hyper-alkalizing the pH of the urine will increase into the high 8's and 9's. Hyper-alkalization is necessary in order to overcompensate for the negative acidic producing emotions and to bring the body back to health, energy, vitality, hope, peace, harmony and love.

Question: Can our emotions cause cancer?

Dr. Young: Absolutely. I have said that cancer is a four letter word - ACID. When you are doing negative acidic emotions, such as anger, revenge, hate, sadness or depression you are creating metabolic acids that can cause ANY and ALL cancerous conditions of the body tissues. If metabo lic acids are not removed via urination, perspiration, defecation or respiration then they are delivered to the body tissues. When constant excess acid from negative emotions are poured into the body tissues the body tissues will degenerate causing a cancerous condition. Pharmaceutical companies are creating drugs that may give you the illusion of feeling better but the DO NOT deal with the metabolic acids from negative acidic emotions. This can only lead to more physical and emotional pain.

John states, "given the importance of "emotions" in cancer or acid causation, etc., John was particularly interested in the unique biochemistry of the "reptilian brain", which includes the Amygdala. Acid or sugar activates the areas of the Amygdala very specifically. John has wonder if the pH Miracle alkaline Lifestyle and diet is not more "calming" to the lower emotions (responses of the reptilian brain) than a drug which "Inactivates the Amygdala...assuming we still find value in sexual attraction, socialization, and attraction to home and hearth (all functions of the Amygdala as much as "fight and flight")."

John is absolutely correct - an alkaline lifestyle and diet is calming to the mind and thus calms the e-motions or "energy in motion. This calming of the Amygdala function produces less "stress." And, with less "stress" you have less "acid." And, with less "acid" you have less sickness and dis-ease.

Questions on Probiotics, Antibiotics and Enzymes


Question: This next question sir is very important. I've talked to you a little bit the last couple of days about this question. It is in regards to the supplementation of probiotics and digestive enzymes. They both have strong anecdotal and seemingly clinical positive results. Is it harmful to take a tablespoon of enzymes with a quart of alkalizing greens, and do enzymes have a beneficial effect for the body?

Dr. Young: Taking probiotics and enzymes can have perceived health benefits with many long-term harmful effects.

Probiotics and enzymes are acidifying to the body and therefore should not be ingested for long periods of time.

Probiotics are biological transformations of what use to be healthy organized matter into bacteria, yeast and/or mold. All bacteria is the evidence of matter fermenting and breaking down to adapt to a changing acidic environment. There is no such thing as healthy bacteria. All bacteria including the ones found in the body and especially in the small and large intestines are morbid evolutions of putrefying plant and/or animal food and/or body cells. My theory is to keep your alimentary canal clear, clean, free of cellular debris and all bacteria, yeast or mold. This would be the healthy alkaline state of the small and large bowel.

When one is constipated with undigested animal flesh in the small and/or large intestine, acidic probiotics and enzymes may help to breakdown this undigested protein. This may provide for temporary relief with better bowel elimination. This may be the only benefit from ingesting these potentially harmful acidic supplements.

The reason I suggest probiotics and enzymes are potentially harmful is they can also damage healthy cells and tissues, including the delicate intestinal villi. The intestinal villi, line the wall of approximately 27 feet of the small intestine, increasing the surface area to over 7,200 square feet. I call the intestinal villi of the small intestine the root system of the body. The intestinal villi are like plant roots and can be damaged by acidic food, drink, bacteria, yeast, mold, enzymes, probiotics, and antibiotics. Bottom-line, when you ingest enzymes and/or probiotics you may gain short-term benefits (the breakdown of undigested matter from meat and dairy) but you may also incur long-term damage to the root system of your body - the breakdown of the intestinal villi.

As I have mentioned, enzymes are acids. The word "enzyme" itself means "ferment". It is a Greek word. When you understand that enzymes are all acids, and that most of America is congested or constipated to a lesser or greater degree, any enzyme ingested may help break down some of the undigested food in the 9 yards of the intestine. This undigested food, (meat), which rarely completely breaks down on its own, comes from chicken, beef, turkey or fish. The real risk in taking enzymes or probiotics are the acidic damage to the root system of the body while trying to break down and eliminate undigested food. The best choice is to eliminate all animal protein from the diet to prevent the bowel congestion or constipation. Even the mucus created from the acids of dairy products (lactic acid) may be dissolved with enzymes and/or probiotics. But, long-term use of acidic enzymes or probiotics are not good for the health of the alimentary canal. Once again, the risk is a compromised alkaline environment in the small and large intestine and damage to the delicate intestinal villi of the small intestine.

My 30 years of research has indicated that the impact of enzymes and probiotics, including antibiotics will eventually compromise the alimentary canal and damage the delicate intestinal villi in the small intestine.

Once you understand that the alimentary canal is not a digestive system but an alkaline-buffering system, then you realize that from the mouth to the stomach, to the duodenum to the intestines, these organs are trying to raise the pH of the food, not digest the food.

Food, in and of itself, is broken down from the inside out from the mere fact that you break the membranes of that food with your teeth. Once you break the membranes of any organized matter, with your teeth, it will start its own disorganization or digestion. So, food digests from the inside out not from the outside in as suggested by current medical savants. The theory that food digests in the stomach is FALSE. Food is alkalized in the stomach not digested in the stomach. And, the major purpose of the stomach is to produce sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the food and the liquids you eat.

Out of the disorganizing food, acids or enzymes are released as a waste product of that disorganization or unfolding of the plant or animal cells. The enzymes or acids released from the food when broken with your teeth activates the alkaline-buffering system. The alkaline buffering system includes the mouth, the stomach, the pylorus glands, the duodenum, the pancreas, the gallbladder, and the alkalizing glands in the small intestine, that all release sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the food you eat and the liquids you drink. The major contributor of sodium bicarbonate for maintaining the alkaline design of the body is the stomach. The stomach therefore is an organ of contribution not an organ of digestion which is currently taught by traditional and holistic doctors. The stomach is an alkalizing organ.

In the mouth, the salivary glands start secreting sodium bicarbonate, to raise the alkalinity of the food and to neutralize or buffer the food enzymes or acids. The process of alkalizing the food continues in the stomach as the stomach lining releases sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the food. Yes, for every molecule of sodium bicarbonate produced to alkalize the food you ingest a molecule of hydrochloric acid is also produced. But, the hydrochloric acid never touches or should never come in contact with the food you eat. The sodium bicarbonate produced in the lining of the stomach rises to meet the food as the hydrochloric acid falls into the gastric pits of the stomach away from the food. Hydrochloric acid is the WASTE PRODUCT of sodium bicarbonate production and will destroy the life or electron potential of the food. That is why you find residues of hydrochloric acid in the stomach after the food has taken up all the alkaline sodium bicarbonate and left for the small intestine. The hydrochloric acid in the stomach is the evidence that the food has been alkalized and is on its way to the intestines for transformation into stem cells and then red blood cells. The primary site for stem cell and red blood cell production is in the crypts of the intestinal villi.

When the food leaves the stomach, hopefully in a liquefied alkaline state and enters the duodenum the pancreas secrets more sodium bicarbonate to raise the pH of the liquefied food up to an alkaline pH of 8.2 to 8.4. The food is now prepared to be received by the small intestine for transformation into stem cells and then red blood cells.

As the food enters the small intestine in a liquefied alkaline state it falls into the crypts of the intestinal villi to be transformed into the new stem cells that will become the new erythroblast, and the new erythrocyte or red blood cell. These new cells are then taken up into blood circulation via the portal vein and the inferior vena cava to the heart for oxygenation and general circulation.

What I have described to you is the normal healthy alkaline process of the food you ingest and how it is alkalized (not digested) and how it becomes your new blood and eventually your new body cells. The process of food becoming blood and then body cells takes place in an alkaline environment - not in an acidic environment.

When the small intestine is clear of bacteria, yeast, mold, enzymes, probiotics, antibiotics and undigested food, then the normal healthy process of food transformation can take place creating healthy strong stem cells that will then become healthy strong red blood cells and eventually healthy strong body cells.

Taking enzymes, probiotics and antibiotics disrupts this normal healthy alkaline process of creating stem cells and then red blood cells in the small intestine which then leads to ALL sickness and disease. This is also the cause of all anemic conditions of the blood. This is why I no longer use or recommend the use of supplemental probiotics and/or digestive enzymes. And, most important why I never recommend the ingestion of ANY antibiotics. They destroy the alkaline design of the body, beginning with the most important system of body - the alkaline buffering system.

One last thing to remember. When you eat raw foods you eat them for their electrical energy potential not for their enzyme potential. The enzymes in raw foods are released when you break their cellular membranes with your teeth. All enzymes are poisonous acidic waste products of cellular breakdown that are buffered in the mouth, stomach, duodenum and small intestine by sodium bicarbonate. The reason you should eat liberal amounts of organic raw electron-rich alkaline foods is for their electron-rich alkaline properties - not for their toxic acidic enzymes.

Finally, the answer to your question - Is it harmful to take a tablespoon of enzymes with a quart of alkalizing greens, and do enzymes have a beneficial effect for the body?

The answer to your question is absolutely yes - enzymes are harmful to the body. Enzymes should not be ingested with alkalizing greens. Enzymes destroy the alkalizing effect of the greens. And second, enzymes should only to be used with a client or patient with extreme bowel constipation and for a very short period of time. I prefer to have my clients use mineral salts such as magnesium carbonate and/or magnesium oxide to break-up the undigested proteins in the 9 yards of the small intestine. You can also drink whole leaf cold-pressed aloe vera juice, which can also be helpful in breaking up undigested food in the bowel. The best advise I can give you is to stay away from probiotics, antibiotics and enzymes and choose to alkalize your body with electron-rich alkaline foods and drinks. That is, if you want to live a life of health, energy and fitness, free from ALL sickness and disease?

Blood Plasma Lactic Acid Accelerates Aging?

Does serum lactic acid and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels increase with age?

Loiseleur and Morel were the first to report in 1931 about an increase of serum lactic acid with age (1).

However, in a study by Gottfried, Pelz and Clifford published in 1961 it was observed no difference in serum lactic acid levels between a group of 49 men and women over 70 years of age and a control group under 50 years of age (2).

Also, Davis and colleagues in a study published in 1966 have reported that serum lactic acid does not increase with age. In two groups of ambulatory patients with average age of 67 years, totaling 544 subjects who were free of overt acute diseases, the regression analysis for both serum lactic acid and LDH not revealed any significant change (3).

Contrasting with the reports from Gottfried (2) and Davis (3), a study by Nagamine and Shima published in 1989 indicated from the serum chemical analysis, obtained from 1822 male and 1870 women outpatients, the values for LHD were higher in female over 50 years of age than in their counterpart. When male and female were combined the normal reference ranges for LDH tended to be elevated. The values for total cholesterol and triglyceride reached a peak at a certain age (4).

Taking in view the conflicting results in the above mentioned papers, we think that new investigations are warranted in order to definitively clarify if serum lactic acid and LDH are increased with ageing, if there is correlation with cholesterol levels, and about the potential of causal relations, as preached by the acidity theory of atherosclerosis (5).

Recalling O. J. Pollak, 1952:

“Certainly all tissues change with age. There is anatomic and chemical aging. The acidity of tissues increases with age; this favors the precipitation of cholesterol”

Reversing Type I Diabetes - A Human Experiment

The Patterns of Colon Cancer Appear In The Coagulated Blood

The Use of Antibiotics, Probiotics and Enzymes Are Harmful to the Body

The micrographs below show oxidative/mycotoxic stress due to the use of probiotics, antibiotics and digestive enzymes.

The patterns seen in the dried coagulated blood or white polymerized protein pools are also indicative to a pre-cancerous condition of the small and/or large bowel.

The ideal pH of the small bowel is 8.4 free of ALL bacteria. The ideal pH of the large bowel is 7.4 free from all toxic acids, bacteria and yeast.

The use of antibiotics, probiotics and enzymes is based upon an old theory of digestion. The so-called digestive system is now correctly defined as the "alkalizing buffering system" with the ideology that food digests from the inside out once the membranes of the food have been broken with the teeth via mastication.

The mouth secrets alkaline compounds to buffer the enzymes or acids from the food during mastication and the stomach's primary purpose is to alkalize the food ingested NOT digest the food ingested.

The pancreas and the gallbladder along with other glands such as the pylorus glands secret sodium bicarbonate on the food ingested to begin up the pH to 8.4 in preparation of that food chyme to be transformed into stem cells. This biological transformation of the liquid alkalized food ttakes place in the crypts of the small intestine.

The large intestine main purpose is to adsorb and absorb alkalizing minerals and water back into the blood and then eliminate acid residues as solid or liquid waste.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Tied To Dr Young's Acid Theory


Obstructive sleep apnea: Intermittent hypoxia leads to sympathetic overactivity and then to atherosclerotic process

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is caused by upper airway collapse during inspiration, causing intermittent hypoxemia, hypercapnia, acidosis, sympathetic nervous system activation, and arousal from sleep.

Mounting evidence shows that OSA is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease which is supported by epidemiological association studies. Longitudinal cohort studies also provide evidence that patients with untreated severe sleep apnea have an increased rate of cardiovascular events. The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is 3 to 5 times higher in patients with OSA compared with control populations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
Atherosclerosis is recognized as the precursor stage of coronary-myocardial disease.

A very recent paper published in Circulation Journal (8), by far the largest study to date, has showed that moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of coronary heart disease or death by 68% in men under the age of 70, but does not increase the risk for men over 70 or for women. A total of 1927 men and 2495 women 40 years of age and free of coronary heart disease and heart failure at the time of baseline polysomnography were followed up for a median of 8.7 years in this prospective longitudinal epidemiological study.

Increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque occurrence was reported in OSA patients without any other significant co-morbidity compared to matched controls (9, 10, 11, 12).

The prevalence of hypertension is very high and the incidence of hypertension increases as the number of apneic and hypopneic events per hour rises. The association of OSA and hypertension has additive effects on the development of atherosclerosis. Daytime hypertension develops secondary to the persistently elevated sympathetic state (13). In a recent study of 94 middle-aged patients, the intima-media thickness of carotid artery was positively related to systolic blood pressure and apnea-hypopnea index (14).

Pathophysiological mechanisms linking OSA to atherosclerosis

OSA patients experience intermittent hypoxaemia and CO2 retention that modify the autonomic and haemodynamic responses to sleep (15). Indeed, chronic intermittent hypoxia may lead to sympathetic overactivity (16, 17). A study has shown that with mild apneic events (duration < 20 seconds), pretreatment with 100% oxygen effectively eliminated most of the increase in sympathetic nerve activity (25).

It is interesting to notice that continuous positive airway pressure treatment may reverse early signs of atherosclerosis (18).

There is increasing evidence that intermittent hypoxia is independently associated with dyslipidemia (19). In addition to clinical data, animal experiments also support a role of intermittent hypoxia in the pathogenesis of dyslipidaemia in sleep-disordered breathing (20, 21, 22).

The studies above mentioned confirm old experiments performed on rabbits where oxygen deficiency was attained by placing the animals daily into a chamber with decreased oxygen content (down to 12%) for 3–6 hours, for 4 months. It was shown that prolonged hypoxia brings about a high hypercholesterolemia and greatly intensifies the development of aortic and coronary atherosclerosis (26).

The demonstration that chronic intermittent hypoxia may lead to sympathetic overactivity and dyslipidemia adds more evidence to the acidity theory concept (23), with intermittent hypoxemia joining to other key factors for atherosclerosis, as discussed recently in this blog (24).

Lactic Acid and Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) Cause Atherosclerotic Lesions.

Old experiments with rabbits and dogs provide powerful evidence for the Acidity Theory of Atherosclerosis (1)

Follows a summary about 2 studies from the beginning of the last century showing that acid-fed rabbits and dogs may develop atherosclerotic lesions:

1) Experiments from Oswald Loeb, a well-known professor in pharmacology and scientist from the University of Gottingen - Germany, have demonstrated in study published in 1913, that lactic acid-fed rabbits and dogs have resulted in atherosclerotic lesions in these animals (2). The book “Arteriosclerosis and hypertension, with chapters on blood pressure" (3), by Louis M Warfield, M. D. (Johns Hopkins), showed the following commentary about the experiments from Oswald Loeb:
“Oswald Loeb produced changes in the arteries of rabbits by feeding them sodium lactate (lactic acid). His controls fed on other acids became cachectic, but showed no arterial changes. He further found that in 100 gm. of human blood there was normally from 15 to 30 mg. of lactic acid. After heavy work, he found as much as 150 gm. He considers that after adrenalin or nicotin injections, the function of the liver is so disturbed that lactic acid is not bound. The arteriosclerosis is actually due to the presence of free lactic acid in the circulation. He succeeded, also, in producing lesions of the intima in a dog fed for a long time on protein poor diet, plus lactic acid and sodium lactate.”

2) I. Adler, M.D., from the Laboratories of the New York Board of Health, told in his paper entitled “Studies on Experimental Atherosclerosis” (4), published in 1913, that a casual remark by Dr. P. A. Levene have suggested the simple procedure of adding dilute hydrochloric acid to the dog's food and thus producing a chronic hyperacidity. This led Adler to include acid-fed dogs in his experiments. He told in his paper that though only two dogs have thus far been fed with hydrochloric acid, presenting sclerotic affections, the possibility can not be denied, especially in view of the numerous negative results with other methods, that these positive results are not mere coincidences, but are probably due to the hydrochloric acid. Referring at the end of his paper about the acid-fed dogs presenting atherosclerotic lesions he stated “that the work is being continued, and definite conclusions would at this stage be premature; but perhaps it may be permitted, even now, to venture the statement that in all probability the theory which bases atherosclerosis on a purely mechanical etiology will not prove tenable. Whether mechanical factors come into play at all, and if so, to what extent, remains to be seen. It seems almost certain, at least in our present state of knowledge, influences, subject possibly to more or less nerve control, are dominant factors in the etiology of atherosclerosis. Perhaps it may be discovered also that cholesterin and its various modifications and combinations, while undoubtedly an element of importance in atherosclerosis of the rabbit and human beings, may not be the sole predominant etiological factor.“. He finished telling that “If it should turn out that so simple a procedure as adding a certain proportion of hydrochloric acid to the food of dogs is sufficient to produce lesions of the blood vessels closely analogous, if not wholly identical with human atherosclerosis, a revision of our present theories will become necessary“.
