She's baaaaaaaack! Gwen Stefani is on the cover of January's Vogue cover.  The No Doubt frontwoman was last seen on the magazine's cover 6 years ago! Photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the rockstar - even her other bandmates make a cameo in the mag.

ASK JOEY: Check Out Our Fashion Directory!

I just wanted to remind you about our ModelWire Fashion Directory.  Don't forget to take advantage of it - all of these agencies work closely with ModelWire and ModelWire Network and are some of the biggest names in the business.  Try reaching out to them and setting up meetings.  But first, make sure your portfolio is up-to-date and you are truly showing off your best work.  Otherwise, you might lose the opportunity of seeing the agency again.  Also, just a reminder, agencies see hundreds of girls a day.  Ask yourself, how will you stand out?  Good luck!

MOLLY CURLEY
Hello!  I'm currently signed with an agency in Boston (Model Club Inc).  I'm looking to sign with an agency in NYC.  I absolutely love modeling.  I don't want anything more than to make it in this business!  My ultimate dream is to be a Victoria's Secret model and walk in their fashion show!  I would love it if you could take a look at my profile and pictures and tell me what you think.  Do you think I have potential?  What do you think is the best direction for me?  I know I have been asked so many times to define what my "brand" is.  I think that I have the all-American, girl-next-door look.  But I can also be sexy and look more Mediterranean.

You have a really good look.  If you're signed to Model Club they should have the proper connections with agents in New York City.  Have them set up your meetings.  It's also to their benefit to do so (if another agency signs you, they get Mother agency commission).  They should be more than willing to help you out.  That's what agencies are for!
TAMARA OMEL
I have a question - how do I get signed with Wilhelmina?

You live in New York City.  They have open calls - just find out when and go.  But before you go, you need to make sure to put on some clothes.  Fashion modeling is about all types of clothing, not just lingerie.  Do some test shoots with clothes on.  Also, you don't have your sizes listed - make sure you fully fill out your profile.
BRIANNA ROBINSON
I would definitely like your feedback on my pictures and on my look.  I want to become the very best which means listening to professionals like you.  I'm looking at Plus-Size runway work and commercial work.

Like I told Tamara, you need to put some clothes on.  Fashion is more than just underwear.  Get some more images up - you have a good look and good sizes but you're definitely more commercial than high fashion.  Take advantage of it - get more photos that are more commercial.
JOANNA MARLOW
I came to the United States a few years ago and realized this was the right place to start my career.  However, I don't really know the right people and I'm still not sure where to go and how to go about things.  I would appreciated your advice and direction.  I'm 37 years old and not really at the desired age.  Do I still have a shot of making it?  How do I do it?

You have a great commercial look!  You also live in Florida.  There are lots of agencies in South Beach that do more commercial type representation than fashion - get out there and see them.  Make some calls and ask for meetings.  You can even use our fashion directory as a resource.  You're actually quite perfect for that market.
OLIVIA JOHNSON
I'm wondering if you'd check out my current pictures and give me some feedback.  I'm also looking for advice for how to get my career going while I'm still stuck in Wisconsin finishing my undergraduate.  Any suggestions?  I'm meeting with The Rock Agency in Madison, WI next week to sign my contract with them but I'm not sure if there are additional steps I can be taking to get ready.  Great site - thanks for the channel to get myself out there!

You're in good hands with The Rock Agency.  They are one of the best agencies in the country.  They have connections all over the major markets and will take good care of you.  As far as your port goes, you need more stylized fashion shots.  I like your look, but you just need more photos.  Your agent should be able to tell you what type of look best suits you.  Don't lose your connection!  Also, say hi to Raquel for me!
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

Model of the Month:  Nikia Phoenix

Why modeling?
A lot of people forget that modeling is an art form.  When I'm in front of a camera, I transform into a whole other being.  Modeling allows me to dig underneath the surface and discover certain emotions to produce beautiful, compelling images.  It's a challenge, but worth it.
What inspires you?
I'm like a chameleon that takes on the skin of my surroundings.  Inspiration can be found in a conversation with a stranger or even something as simple as color.  At this moment, I'm driven by touch.  The memory of a feeling or the impression someone's left on my heart.  It stirs up creativity.
What do you look for when selecting a photographer to work with?
The relationship between a photographer and a model is very intimate.  When I look at a photographer's work, I need to feel something.  Does it inspire me?  Does their talent intimidate me?  So when we do start shooting, there's a mutual respect for each other's art.  It's like a dance but it doesn't really matter who's leading or who's following.  And when you're done, you leave the shoot knowing they have influenced you and you have done the same to them.
What is your personal style?
My style depends on my mood.  If I'm feeling tough, then I dress tough.  I live in jeans, tanks and beat-up boots.  If I feel sophisticated, then I wear a pencil skirt and killer heels.  I normally go for classic pieces with funky accessories.  Recently I've rediscovered my curves and my legs, so I've been wearing a lot of body conscious dresses.  It's feminine and powerful.
What is your favorite band or song of all time?
This one kind of took me by surprise.  I'd heard Lynard Skynard's "Free Bird" all my life.  I liked it, but I didn't realize how much.  Over the summer, I was taking a long drive at night.  The moon was high above and the wind was on my face.  The song came on the radio.  My life had just gone through a big transition and the words touched my soul.  "I'm as free as a bird now.  And this bird you cannot change."  I am that bird.

Photographer of the Month:  Nathan Heyward

Why photography?
I enjoy being able to capture what I see and share it with other people.
Who is your favorite photographer of all time?
Herb Ritts.
What is your favorite project you have worked on?
My favorite project was a shoot for Velvet Addiction Magazine.  I got to shoot Amanda Baker and Chrishell Stauss from All My Children.
What genre does your work focus on?
I did a lot of Beauty when I first moved to New York.  Now I am moving towards shooting more editorial and commercial work.
What kind of camera/equipment do you use?
I shoot with a Nikon D300S.

Makeup Artist of the Month:  Satya Linak

Why makeup artist?
My passion for makeup artistry was born during my cancer experience.  It inspired me to help others and to create beauty.  There is nothing else in the world I'd rather do.  When I see the results of my work, it makes me happy.  I am living my dream!
What product can you not live without?
Right now it's Weleda Skin Food, Nars Copacabana Illuminator, OCC Lip Tars, Benefit Stay Don't Stray, Makeup Forever Flash Color Palette, M.A.C. Soft Matte Brown Eye Shadow, M.A.C. Harmony Blush...I'll stop there but the list goes on.  I love products!
What is your favorite band or song of all time?
Depeche Mode.  It would be my dream to work on them someday!  Can anyone reading this make it happen?!
What inspires you?
I am inspired by so many things - art (in all forms), fashion magazines, photography, graffiti in my neighborhood, color, music, good energy, meditation, the Dalai Lama, my parents, all cancer survivors, whichever wig I decide to wear each day, beautiful skin, seeing how the light plays on the angles of a person's face (it gets me super excited for highlighting and contouring), creative people, and especially other makeup artists.  I feel like we are always learning and evolving no matter where we're at in our careers.  So I love working with other makeup artists because I might learn a new technique, perspective, or product I don't normally use.
What is your favorite project you have worked on?
It's hard to choose.  I've had so many cool jobs!  Scrubs actors, and M.I.A. music video, Daniel Dae Kim of Lost, ELEON Clothing line shoot with gorgeous Victoria's Secret models, K.Rose who is a pop singer with Interscope Records and the "Days of Our Lives" book which is coming out soon.  Nobody knows that I was a faithful "Days of Our Lives" watcher for 15 years.  After I booked the job I was super excited!  Though being the professional that I am, when I worked on "Bo Brady" he had no idea I was such a huge fan.  I look forward to more great opportunities like these!

Hair Stylist of the Month:  Keila Sone

Why hairstyling?
As a teenager I always styled my own hair all intricate and crazy, like straight out of a runway show.  My best friend (who is also a hairstylist) told me I should look into beauty school as a career option.  I figured I could make a living doing something creative and pursue other areas in visual arts as well, so it was a win-win for me.
Who is your favorite hair stylist of all time?
Ed Morlands and Mark Garrison.
What inspires you?
Animation, films, fantasy books, music, nature and underground subculture.
What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?
It's very important that the model can sell the product, so I am always looking for versatility in their portfolio and reels as well as having the right hair texture and facial beauty.
What is your personal style?
A bit goth, Lolita, punk and corporate chic.

Wardrobe Stylist of the Month:  Amanda Wall

What inspires you?
Films, music and thrift shopping.
What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?
Character, personality, and incredible face!
What is your favorite store to shop at?
Wasteland (on Melrose) in Los Angeles.
What is your personal style?
Currently something like a French actress from the 60's mixed with 90's bondage.
What genre does your work focus on?
I've done a ton of work in the Beauty industry, but recently started to focus on Editorial work.

ASK JOEY: Make Sure To Sign A Release

We often get caught up in the excitement of a photo shoot that we forget about the logistics.  Folks, please remember to sign some sort of contract or waiver.  With every photo shoot, models are usually asked to sign releases in order to use those images.  If you forget to sign something, please be advised that photographers are allowed to use your images because you agreed to do the shoot.  Be careful!  Although the glitz and glamor of modeling can be great, it is still a business.  Good luck!

NIGEL LEE
I currently get some work and everyone I meet tells me I have a great high fashion look, but I haven't been able to land any big jobs yet.  Based on my look, is there anything that you would recommend?

You do have a high fashion look but you don't have any high fashion photos.  I would suggest doing some more test shoots.  Use ModelWire Network to contact a photographer (there are plenty in New York).  Don't go overboard - take some suit shots and some with an elegant female model.  You shouldn't have any trouble getting representation.  And an agent would surely help you land that big gig.
TRAVIS CHAMBERS
I am really trying to figure out where my modeling career is going.  I've done mostly fashion - I even did a photo shoot with Ralph Lauren that was published in the GQ September issue.  But I want to take my career into full speed.  I get tons of compliments on my look and am very confident in myself.  I know I can do it.  Please help me out!

If you worked for Ralph Lauren then you should have the tear sheets.  They should be in your portfolio.  You should also take more photos .  You have way too many pictures with the same white suit.  Get an agent to take you to the next level.  But first things first - perfect your portfolio.  I don't see anything special right now based on it.  Once you get new photos, you'll be able to get more work!
CAM DILLARD
I'm a commercial/fashion model trying to get to the next level.  I'm 6'0" and also work as a personal trainer so I stay in pretty good shape.  I don't have an agency as of right now but want to get signed.  Any advice or criticism from you would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

You are a commercial model but you need more photos.  Commercial models need to be able to show off all types of looks, so get those photos.  You need a lot of "real people" shots with different situations.  I can't stress enough to add more photos to your port.  You have a good look though!
ED CASTRO
The industry is tough and I'm currently signed to a small agency (KSR Management) but I have met with Paul Nelson from Wilhemina and another agent for Ford.  They both were interested in me but ultimately I was still out of shape back then.  I was 250 lbs and now I'm 185 and hitting the gym on a regular basis.

You have one photo in your portfolio.  If you are serious about this, get more photos.  Once you have more photos, you can show more agencies. But right now - one photo and look isn't going to cut it.
BRIAN GARDNER
I was wondering what you thought of my portfolio on this site and how I can improve my chances at getting an agent.

You're a commercial model - smile more.  You're so intense in your photos, have more fun in your photos.  I would suggest also taking acting classes because you're going to have to compete with actors for the commercial modeling jobs.  Make sure you revamp your portfolio before you go out for any jobs.  Again, you only have look and you're going to need a lot more in order to land those gigs!
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

Justin Bieber Wore What?

Justin Bieber is getting a lot of flack for the outfit he wore while meeting the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper.  Why?  Because he wore overalls.  Justin defended his fashion faux pas by saying he met with the Prime Minister right after rehearsals and didn't have a suit to put on right away.  Oh JB, it's not what you didn't wear - it's what you wore!

What's the big deal?

A Kate Moss Documentary In The Works?

The usually secretive Kate Moss has never enjoyed being in the limelight, but it seems she is ready to share her personal life.  She is currently preparing to release her book Kate:  The Kate Moss Book and it looks like there is also going to be a Kate Moss documentary.  This is huge for Kate Moss fans who have always been interested in the mega model's personal life!  The film will feature her promoting her new book as well as a glimpse into her personal life.  We don't know about you, but we're actually quite excited for this documentary!

AskJoey: Most of You Are Commercial Models

Most models fit into the commercial modeling category - this can be for a number of reasons but mostly because high fashion ask for specific measurements and looks.  Not everyone is a Kate Moss - don't give your hopes up just yet - commercial modeling is quite lucrative and you can definitely become a successful model that way.  But be aware that the competition for commercial modeling is really high!  You are going against actors, other models and even high fashion models.  Work hard and go for commercial jobs - they're out there, you just need to go after it!  Next week I will be taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Hope you have a good holiday!

HANNAH L
I am an experienced and professional international model having worked in Asia and USA markets.  I'm currently in LA and looking for work/representation.  I am not 18 anymore but still look in person, am in shape and I think I have a strong book but I'm not sure if I should go the open call route or not.

I really like your look - you definitely do have a strong look.  But unfortunately you aren't 5'9".  You're going to need to look for agents that are more commercial and test for commercial photos.  If you don't anyone that can set you up with appointments with agencies, then the only way to go is the open call route.  But remember you are a commercial model - not high fashion.
RIKA
I would like to hear your advice and opinion about the "alternative" market.  As you can see, I'm not the classic model.  I'm full of tattoos and I'm definitely not a runway model but more of a print model.  In fact, I was looking for something in that direction.

I like your look but tattoos just don't work in our commercial world.  You would most likely have to cover them up.  But the alternative market is very hard to succeed as far as making a steady living - it's very rare.  It's doable, but again, very challenging.  Your best bet is to do more commercial things, but just know that it will be hard.
STEPHANIE FRICK
I definitely need some pointers on building my portfolio.  I'm looking to join an agency but I'm pretty clueless as how to go about it.  Any help would be appreciated!

You have a great commercial look but your pictures are too sexy.  You need a variety of photos to get into commercial modeling.  Before you start visiting agencies make sure you have a plethora of looks.  Keep a couple of your bathing suit photos and put the rest in a scrapbook - you need photos of you in business suits, sporty outfits and casual clothes.  You don't want to typecast yourself as a bikini model - you have a great commercial look - just work more on your portfolio.
RACHEL ENGLEHART
Like every model on here, I'm looking for feedback if you're willing.  I modeled for 9 years in Denver and want to get back into it, but outside of the agencies I have worked with in the past.  Based on my pictures, am I chasing something that is over or can you point me in a direction?

If you worked in Denver for 9 years (which to me is a very commercial market), there is no reason why you can't go back there and give it another go.  Visit your old agent and get his opinion on the market and how you would fit in.  You do need a few more photos though - mix it up more.  If you've never worked in a big market, I would say it's not worth it, but because you've worked in Denver, you have a pretty good shot.
ERIN BARTEK
I'd like to ask your advice with the direction of my interest in modeling.  I am 29 years old so I'm probably not the new "up and coming young fashionista" but I'd like to think I've got potential.  Would you mind taking some time to look at my portfolio?  I'd be very appreciative of any advice you'd feel would help me.  I'm currently expanding my portfolio to include less "posed" photos and will keep you updated as they are uploaded into the account.

Commercial, commercial - that's the way to go!  Even though you have the height, you still fall in the commercial category.  You have a great look and I like your photos - but you definitely need more types of photos.  You need to be able to fit into any situation.  You have a good commercial look - go for it!

In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

Model is Human Barbie

Valeria Lukyonova, who is originally from the Ukraine has had several surgery procedures to resemble a real life Barbie doll.  She is currently featured in V Magazine after they got wind of her radical transformation.  What do you think of her?  Did she take things too far?  Take a look at her photos - they are kind of mind blowing!
