ASK JOEY: Know Your Type!

Knowing where to start and finding an agent really comes down to knowing your type and how to market yourself. I've said it before, but if you do not have traditional fashion sizes, do not start off by pursuing a high-fashion career. You will just be disappointed. Start commercially, where it won't matter how tall you are, etc... Take acting classes. Get some good commercial shots, and send them to agents. If an agency doesn't immediately sign you, but gives you feedback or constructive criticism, take that information and run with it. It means they see potential, rather just a polite "no."

AJA MAREE
I recently moved to LA from a small town because I met an agent who suggested that I model. I had never thought of myself as a model but have have been getting good feedback from the people I work with. I've been at this for two months and my question is, based on my photos, do you think I'm "big agency material?"
You have hot looking pictures, but you will need more variety or you will be type cast. Unfortunately, you're not "big agency material" because of your height. However, there are tons of great agencies for your look/type. You can also consider getting some more commercial looking shots and going that route too. You've definitely got a pretty face and can work. You're in LA, so you're in the right place for it.

JADA ROSE
I am looking for a manager or agency, but am I agency ready? I just don't want to be turned down even though sometimes being turned down isn't a bad thing... thoughts?
All of your photos are pretty provocative. Before looking for an agent, I would suggest covering up a bit and getting some more commercial shots done. They will definitely be more of what the agents are looking for when they're meeting with new faces to sign. Also, you will have to be in a major market. Try Boston first, from there you can look for work in NY as well.
CHERYL
I need some direction. I'm interested in print/lifestyle modeling and need to find an agent. I live in the Atlanta Metro area. Do I have the right look for that type of modeling? I'm new to the industry and am interested in finding representation commercially and in print/lifestyle modeling.
There's a lot going on in Atlanta, that's for sure. There are plenty of agents to see, but I honestly don't know what they are looking for there. You may have to have an acting background. (Which definitely won't hurt in Atlanta with all the production that goes on there.) You have a special look, hair, and size (being so tall) that will be unique for a lot of agencies. I say go for it! You're in the right kind of market to get started.
CGREENE
I am a bit confused about some of the advice I have seen about submissions to agencies and about starting a portfolio. Often times, agencies ask for simple snapshots and people are advised not to pay for professional pictures until they have already been signed, as agents want to develop your portfolio with you. Yet I also see advice about having a good portfolio or comp card to send to agents. Which advice is correct? I have submitted to some agencies, but have not yet gotten representation. (One agency did book me fore an appointment and recommended I take acting classes. Another said they had enough talent of my type.) I have had a couple shoots with student photographers but I'm not sure what other types of pictures I need.
For fashion, you're right, a few pictures is all it takes. If the agent likes you, they'll do the rest. You're also right for TV and commercial modeling - you will need a comp card or professional head shots to get in. From what you're telling me agents have said to you when you've met with them, they are turning you down politely. I would suggest taking acting classes, as the first agent suggested. You will definitely need them if you are interested in working commercially.
SAMANTINA ZENON
My biggest concern right now is how to find representation. Am I ready? Where should I start?
You live in the biggest market in the world for modeling. Make sure that you know you are a commercial type for modeling and TV. Make some appointments with agents to get their feedback. See what they say. Take acting classes. You've got an interesting and marketable look, but are definitely a commercial type.
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

ASK JOEY: Don't Forget to Network!

For those of you on ModelWire Network who are just starting out, make the most of the site by connecting with other users - ESPECIALLY PHOTOGRAPHERS! When you are looking to build your portfolio, you have an excellent resource at your fingertips to find other members in your area to collaborate with for trade. Many photographers on MWN shoot more than just editorial. If you are more of a commercial type, you can definitely find people who will take head shots and other commercial print shots for trade. If you're in a smaller market, try reaching out to local photographers to see if they, or any of their assistants, would be willing to shoot for trade. You'll never know if you don't ask, and the worst they can say is "no thanks."

SHELLEY FRANCISCO
I know you get a ton of questions asking how one would get started in the industry, but my question is how do you get connections with photographers? With my height, I can probably only do commercial modeling, but I'm having a hard time trying to find Photographers who are willing to shoot with me because most of them do high fashion or the ones that contact me are usually sketchy. How should I go about this because I would really love to take more pictures to use in my portfolio?

You should definitely be able to find photographers on MWN that are looking to build a portfolio and can use your type. Trying posting a project looking for a photographer to work with. You could even use MWN to find local hair stylists, makeup artists, and/or wardrobe stylists who would want to collaborate on a shoot. If you have an agent, even if it's your commercial agent, they can also probably recommend some photographers for you to work with. As an expanded portfolio will help your agent as well, it certainly doesn't hurt to ask!

STORMIE ROCHELLE EVANS
I'm only 5'3" tall, so are print and fitness modeling the only types I might be able to get into? What are the options at my height? Also, I'm just starting out and have absolutely no experience. What is the best way to get started?
Start on MWN and find photographers to work with. You definitely need to get a few pictures to get started. You don't need a ton of pictures for an agent to see your potential, but you definitely need more than one! The photo you do have looks dated, so try connecting with photographers. I would say you are definitely more of a commercial type, and as such, you should study acting if you aren't already. I see you more in that direction than print or fitness modeling. Start with a commercial acting class and go from there.

FRANCESCA C
I really only have the qualifications to work as a print model. I'm not 5'9" or extremely thin. Do you have any advice for how I can get into this niche?
You are definitely a commercial type who could also find TV work. Since you live in a commercial market with a lot of opportunities, definitely get into acting class if you aren't already. If you're just getting started acting, there is a ton of background work in San Francisco, that will help you gain experience.

MORGAN P
I have been working locally in the San Antonio area for a few years and know that I really love modeling. I realize that I will never be the model specs for NY, but I think that I would be able to make it in LA or another similar market because I hve curves and will never be a stick-thin model. I would greatly appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions that you have for me and my pics.

You definitely know your type and what you can do. It's so refreshing to find someone who does not have a false image of themselves. My suggestion would be to try Houston or Dallas first, as they are slightly larger markets than where you're at. Then head to LA. You are right on the money for that market. I can definitely see you finding success there.

DANIELLEMARCIANO
I am 5'5" and very physically fit. I think I would be a great print model for active wear and/or fitness equipment. My question is, at my height, am I too short for consideration and just wasting my time and resources? Based on my description of myself, I know I need to post pictures that show that side of me but I wasn't going to have them done if there would never be a chance for me. What do you think?
You have a pretty face, but at your height, I don't see you being a model for active wear or fitness. I would definitely suggest acting, as I can see you working commercially and on television. You have a great look for a wide variety of characters, but as far as modeling, you will struggle at your height.
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

ASK JOEY: Acting Classes are ALWAYS a Good Place to Start

Getting started in the modeling industry is HARD. Unlike other businesses, if you do not have the right height and sizes, it will be almost impossible to succeed - no matter how beautiful or perseverant you are. Because of this, the majority of new models will find a lot more success in the commercial world. There are many more opportunities there for all looks, shapes and sizes.

My advice for most new models is to take acting classes. No matter what path your modeling career goes down (commercial, high fashion, etc...), acting classes will only help you grow. Who knows... Maybe you are that one in a million who has what it takes to be the next great supermodel, but do you know how to showcase your personality enough to sell something in a TV commercial, not just a print ad? Acting classes - always a great first step.

AMANDA MEINTS
I know I can be a big model, I just need some advice on where to start! Any advice you can provide would be great.
You are very attractive, though not a fashion model due to your sizes. In this business you would be considered a commercial type, which is great because there are a lot more opportunities for work. You have stated that you have an agent. Build from there. Consider checking with your agency to see if they would be willing to represent you commercially, in addition to print. Right now the only women at your height doing high fashion ads are celebrities. Consider creating a commercial plan with your agency and you could see more success.
CAITBAER
I'm new to the modeling world and would love some advice on how to make the most of my modeling career.
You live in NYC, are all the right sizes, and photograph well. A few of the pictures on your profile are a bit blurry, but you have enough shots to make appointments with all the agents in NYC. (Just make sure the photos in your book are hi-res and quality.) Get on the phone and get yourself in the door! I'm sure you'll find an agent who will want to work with you. They can get you tested to suit their needs for you.
CHRISTIANA HOHENRAINER
I'm extremely new and trying to get into modeling. Honestly, I don't know where to start. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!
You are a commercial type model due to your height and sizes, so don't try to go the high fashion route or you will be disappointed. You are very attractive and have a great look. I would suggest acting classes, which will only help a commercial model's career. You also need to be in a market like NYC, LA or Miami where there are agents and clients that work with actors and models. For now, start with a local agent that can get you work in Baltimore or D.C.
IVONA LIV
I would love to figure out how I can move forward with my career. I am still very new to both modeling and acting and have only had one photo shoot so far. My trouble is finding the right wardrobe to incorporate into my portfolio. Any advice?
You're off to a good start with your pictures. They are good enough quality to find an agent, so get yourself to LA and make appointments. Once you find an agent, they will help mold and shape your career. As far as newer pictures, they will be able to suggest photographers that they work with a lot and like. Many photographers will be willing to discuss wardrobe with you beforehand, based on your shoot locations. Don't be afraid to ask!
RANIE
I am really new to this field and would like to know how to get out there and get into modeling. I've only done a few shoots so far. What should my next step be?
You have the same look in all of your pictures (in terms of your expression). Try connecting with a photographer on MWN who would be interested in shooting you for trade. Also, you are on the short side so fashion modeling will be out for you. Are you interested in acting? If so, start taking acting classes and build from there. Once you have those skills in place, you can start working commercially. Also, you are going to need to be in a major market to work. Your best bet based on your location is San Francisco.

In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

ASK JOEY: Am I Ready?

I always love to see the creativity that makeup artists and hair stylists bring to a shoot and am often asked to review portfolios to determine if someone is "ready" to show their work to agencies. Whether your goal is to work in high fashion or special effects, the talent and skill needed to succeed in your craft is something you constantly need to nourish and build. Never stop learning and practicing new techniques. Maybe you are an amazing SFX artist, but will have more opportunities booking more traditional jobs starting out. Make sure you're versatile!

If you're looking for work and aren't sure where to start, try connecting with modeling agencies and working on test shoots. The networking will take you a long way. Once you're feeling confident and getting good feedback, do your best to get meetings with agents who can help you book bigger and better jobs.

MINA DIMAKIS-LEV
I would love your critique on my portfolio. Please advise if I'm ready to show it to agencies.

You have a great book. I absolutely love your style and work. Honestly, I don't understand why an agent in NYC has not signed you yet and couldn't tell you why. If you haven't been submitting to many, DEFINITELY start. Your book is awesome and you are more than ready to start showing it off.
NATALIE L
I know you usually work with models, but I would love your feedback on my portfolio.

For fantasy and high fashion, you are definitely in the wrong place. NYC is where you belong for those types of gigs. Working weddings and proms is fine in smaller markets for income and to build your portfolio, but you definitely need to get your book to big artist agents in NYC. You could also try starting out by working with fashion agencies in a bigger market, like Philly, on shoots with their models. I like your book and style, but definitely think you'll find more opportunities for the type of makeup artistry you're interested in doing in a bigger city.
MAKEUP BY BOBBY
I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to go about contacting an agent. I don't want to make a fool of myself & I want to do it the right way. I'm willing to assist any lead MUA or try to work with a modeling agency on their test shoots. Are my pics good enough to show?

Your book is good enough to show, and I'm assuming that living in New Jersey, you're close enough to NYC. Try to build up some relationships with the modeling agencies there and work with photographers on test shoots for the agency's models. Start with smaller, more boutique agencies if that's where you're more comfortable. You are ready to step out there, so turn on the charm and set up some meetings to show your work!
ROBLEDO STUDIO
I have been in the industry since 2001 and am very interested in getting representation but don't know how to take the first step. I have worked with many agencies in Miami as a freelancer, but then relocated to North Carolina. Please take a look at my portfolio. I would love to know if you think I'm there yet or if I need more work to get into an agency.

I like you work but feel a little like you've exiled yourself by moving out of Miami or any of the other major markets down South. Your work is there, just get yourself seen in markets that have the jobs. I know there is a lot of film and television production going on in NC. Is that why you moved there? Either way, definitely look into getting work as a hair stylist in production, if possible. There will probably be a lot more opportunities in that direction based on your location.
ANGELA LAUREN
I attended makeup training school down in Orlando and am curious if you know where I should go to find opportunities in the Atlanta area. I'm always looking for work. I live in Atlanta but am open to traveling.

I like your stuff for movies and TV. From what I hear, there is a TON of filming going on in Atlanta. I can see your type of artistry on shows filming there like The Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead, or The Originals. See if Click Atlanta has a makeup division and find out who's casting those shows (or any other production that will need SFX makeup).
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

ASK JOEY: Make Sure Your Book's Not All Body!

I'm back! Sorry to have left you hanging the last few weeks, but I was recovering from back surgery and out of commission. Now that I'm all patched up, let's get down to business.

Guys, this one is for you! One of the most important things for male models to have in their books is proof you take nice fashion shots! Body shots are great, and you definitely need a few, but if you want to sign with an agency and/or book jobs, you'll have to prove that you can sell clothes! If you think you might be lacking in the fashion shot department, try collaborating with a MWN photographer in your area for free. You'll both get new pics for your portfolios.

JUSTIN MAGOULAS
I moved from California to New York City to make a step in my careers as a model/actor. I signed with MSA Models over two months ago and have not yet had one audition. I find it hard to find work for myself in this industry, but I know have the look and ability to be marketable. What can I do to get work and add to my resume?

Many fashion agents will you you are too short at 5'10". Also, your book is primarily body shots and not high fashion so my advice would be be go the commercial and TV route. Find the right agents that handle your type in NYC. Unlike California, New York is not all about the body (including height). You have a nice look and should consider acting classes if you aren't taking them already. It just takes time so study hard and get yourself in the door of commercial agencies. You will definitely work!
CORBIN RIVERA
I was scouted through MWN and asked to come into an open call at a boutique agency called Blaze Models. When they went through the contract with me, they mentioned several ways they would be submitting me all free except a $20 monthly fee from your parent site, ModelWire. I just wanted to make sure this is a legit fee before I pay it. I know in LA if you have to pay for something through an agency, something could be fishy.

You've got a nice look but you need to get more fashion shots in your book. Your agent will take care of that. They should help get you tested and make sure you have the right shots in your book for their market. Regarding fees, all agents charge their models to put pictures on the agency website and/or on ModelWire to promote them. This is standard. In the old days, books and model cards were sent by snail mail or FedEx and would be even more expensive. ModelWire and similar websites are actually much more cost effective and save you money in the end.
JORGE N
What advice would you give a Miami native who wants to make it into an agency like Ford, elite, or Wilhelmina?

All agencies, regardless of size, will be looking at your book and whether or not it works for their market. They will definitely need to see more fashion shots in your book. See if you can hook up with a photographer on MWN or elsewhere that will work with you for trade or at no charge. You an also try to find an agent who feels that you have the right look and will work on your book with you. Try making appointments will all of the agents you want to see and they will let you know what direction you need to go in to be considered/signed. If they will help you with your book, great! If they need to see more from you first, they will let you know.
TANNER MIRANDA
I just turned 18 and am hoping to find some modeling jobs. I will be moving to LA soon and am wondering if you can give me some pointers on the best way to get my face/name out there. I'm also a dancer and wondering about how to get jobs related to dance. Is there much of a demand for model/dancers? Any pointers or constructive criticism on my look/photos?

You have a nice look but need to get more fashion shots in your book for modeling gigs. Make appointments to see agents. In LA, you can do it all! Finding agencies that have both dance and print divisions is a great place to start, as you can have different teams at the same agency promoting you for different types of work. You can use the Fashion Directory on ModelWire as one tool to locate fashion, commercial and theatrical agencies in LA.
DENARD HUNT
I have just started modeling and find it very difficult to find jobs. What is the best way to thrive in this business? How can I search for jobs as a model? I have an agent but also look for work on my own.

The main reason you are finding it hard is because of where you live. You need to get to a market where there is more look for your type. I'm sorry to say that, but if this is what you want, start with a bigger market that's not too far away - like Dallas or Chicago. Start there and work your way to LA or New York. That is the only way you will make it happen, unless you get lucky and someone is casting the right kid of job in Oklahoma City for you. With that said, I wouldn't leave it to chance, I would make it happen! You have a good look and can definitely find work in a market with more opportunities.

ASK JOEY: Don't Be Afraid To Be Commercial!

One of my favorite things to do is to review portfolios on ModelWire Network. Many of you don't have specific questions, but are eager to welcome feedback that could help push your careers in one direction or another. When reviewing portfolios, it seems that a lot of you shy away from "commercial" photos. I know of lot of models dream of being the next famous supermodel, but don't be afraid to seek work in commercial print and television. There are many more opportunities in the commercial world for all different looks and types. Make sure you have the photos in your portfolio to highlight the commercial side of your look!

MORGANMENDEZ
I would like you to look at my profile and tell me what you think - if there is something that I need to change or enhance. Based on my profile, are there agencies in L.A. you would suggest I contact?

Your portfolio is very commercial so I hope you are taking advantage of all of the great acting classes available in L.A. There is definitely a lot of competition out there, especially with your look and type. From your photos, you have more of a commercial look than fashion modeling. If you are interested in pursuing fashion modeling, make sure to test test test. You'll need more of those shots in your portfolio. I definitely see you having a commercial acting and modeling career. There are lots of commercial agents in L.A., so I would start by contacting them. Don't be afraid to contact the heavy hitters as well as some of the great boutique agencies who work with fewer clients.
 LUSSIETTE
I would love for you to review my portfolio. It would be so great to get your feedback!
I like your book and think you're off to a great start. Have you seen anyone at Ford or Factor in Chicago? Your portfolio is definitely good enough to find an agent. Once you've found one you like, let them work with you on improving it more to their taste. They will let you know what kind of photos they'd like to see, test you and can recommend photographers in the area to help build upon the great foundation you already have.
 TRACEY
Would you mind taking a look at my portfolio and stats? I would love to know what you think of my look and images. What do you think I should work on?
I like your book for fashion modeling and think it's definitely good enough to present to agents in L.A. They will let you know what they want to see more of in terms of additional photos. As far as your stats, you've got the right height for fashion. Your hips may be big for some sample sizes, but you certainly can't tell from your photos! You look very slim and obviously know how to pose to get great results.
JENNIFERG
I would love for you to review my portfolio!
I like the pictures you have so far, but you definitely need some full body shots. You've got a very commercial look and should also consider adding some business type shots and more traditional commercial headshots. You have a great look, so definitely get yourself a commercial agent if you don't already have one. You're in NYC, so there are plenty of great agencies you should be able to meet with. You've definitely got the right look to get in the door.
JESSICA KO
I'd love for you to review my portfolio and give your feedback/advice!
You've got a great look but your book is too much fashion. I see you as a very commercial type who could work a lot in commercial print and television. Try incorporating more commercial type pictures into your portfolio - headshots, sports shots, business attire, boy/girl shots, etc. Take a commercial acting class to see where it leads you! There are a lot of great photographers, stylists and makeup artists from NY on ModelWire Network you could shoot with to diversify your book.

ASK JOEY: Finding The Right Agent

Whether you are new to the business or have experience and are looking for a change, finding the right agent can be tough. Start with smaller agencies who will get you out there while you build your portfolio. Take your time and find someone who you will work well with, and always be cautious when meeting with unknown agents or scouts. Some will try to take advantage of models eager to get repped. Use your best judgement and you'll find the perfect fit!

CHELSEA DIDIER
I would love any advice you might have about acquiring a modeling manager/agent. I know I have what it takes, I just need to be in the right room. Any advice you have on how I can improve my portfolio would also be more than appreciated.

Your look is more on the commercial side of the modeling business so definitely keep working on your acting as well. You've got a good start to your portfolio, but it could be broader in terms of different types of pictures. You have a lot of headshots, which are great for meeting with talent agents for commercial work, but you'll need more diversity to sign with a print agency. (Try collaborating with some photographers on MWN who have good fashion shots in their portfolios.) Luckily you are in L.A., so make appointments and insist on seeing agents in person!
TYE HUNTER
I would love to hear some constructive criticism. Please take a look at my portfolio and let me know what you think. Also, I've been contacted by a modeling scout who claims to place models with all the top agencies. We have set up a meeting at a cafe because he says he works more from a home office. Does this seem legit? It's hard to tell in this business who's real and who's trying to scam you.
Your portfolio could use a little work, but it's definitely in the right place to get you in the door. If the agents like you, they will get you tested. As for model scouts, some are honest and some are not - you really have to trust your gut. Meet him in a cafe and feel him out. Find out who he scouts for and make a call to find out if he's telling the truth and the agency knows him. Whatever you do, do NOT give him any money. If he places you with an agent, the agency will pay him.
MEAGHANM
It is my dream to be represented by FORD. I have read so much about the agency and I like how they mold their models into success stories. I know you are asked this question all the time but what does FORD look for in a model? I'm 5'9" and have an interesting look. I wish FORD had open calls because I would love to meet with someone and show them my portfolio. Any suggestions?
FORD does hold open calls. (You can find out when and where they are here.) You can also submit to them online. For FORD, your book will need some work. Definitely more fashion shots. Since you are in New York, there are a lot of agencies like FORD you can interview with. Most will have open calls, so find out when and get out there and meet with as many as you can!
JAMIE P
I have two small agencies in L.A. but have been trying to go with a bigger agency. L.A. Models said I was cute but the wrong bone structure, elite said they have girls that look like me, and FORD, Vision, Photogenics, etc. all just said no. Any advice? Are they politely telling me I suck?
They are not telling you that you suck, simply that you're not right for them right now! For now, stay with the smaller agents that are getting work for you. Most people would die to have a rep working for them. Take this time to work on expanding your book and defining your look. It's all about timing.
GRETCHEN STOLL
I was with Vision in New York and am eager to get with an agency in L.A. Who should I go to first and how should I go about doing it?
Why not Vision in L.A.? If you are still repped in NY or parted on good terms, they should be able to set it up. They have a well run agency in L.A., so that's definitely where you should start. Also, MWN has scouting features for ModelWire agencies and you don't have any stats on your profile. Make sure to add them so you're not overlooked!

ASK JOEY: Choose a Niche and Perfect it!

Photographers always try to take a million types of photos. My advice would be to choose a genre of photography (something you really like) and stick to it. That way, you'll also perfect that genre and your chances of getting those types of jobs will increase. Don't try to take so many different types of photos. Your portfolio will look like a hot mess! Just stick to one thing and perfect it - it will pay off. The good thing about MWN is that you can constantly test with models and talent - so don't forget to reach out to other members and do as much test shooting as you can!

IRIDAMETE
I was hoping you could look over my port to see how I'm doing and if I'm ready enough to start going to agencies. That is my next move, so I hope you can be as critical as can be. I believe I'm good enough to start testing with agencies. I can't wait to start branching out more so I can eventually become recognizable. There is no denying that I die for this industry and for my work to improve daily  I couldn't be any more passionate and I think with this attitude that I am on the right track. I'm planning on going to Chicago and New York to meet with agencies. Do you recommend any good ones for the type of work that I do?

I think you're ready to start meeting with agencies! You definitely have some talent.  I would start with a small agency in Chicago and New York and go from there.  I really like your lighting but I think you need more fashion shots - maybe try more shots in studios. Overall, the beauty of your photos is evident and I like how clean your photos are.  For a list of agencies, you can refer to the ModelWire Fashion Directory.
STUDIO BLACK
I would appreciate if you visited my profile and checked out my photos! I'm working on improving and honing my craft.

You seem to really enjoy what you're doing.  You should expand more - most of these photos look like photos that you would take of your girlfriend.  Do you want to do high fashion? If so, you're going to have to work on your portfolio. But if you want to stick to commercial, you need to do more commercial-type shoots. Your photos seem to be somewhere in the middle. I would do more testing and work with different models and see what you enjoy doing most and stick to it.
ROB LANG
I took some time off to work on my art work and am now re-entering the business. I just moved from Santa Fe to Fort Lauderdale and NYC. Please take a look at my work.  I just started contacting agencies.  Ford in Miami has been wonderful. Any suggestions or people that might be good to meet?  Please let me know!

You definitely need more photos in your portfolio. Are you looking to do Men's Fashion or Outdoor? You need a direction and then stick with it. Your photos are very 'rugged'. Is that the look you're going for? If you stick to these type of photos you'll get typecasted and work mostly in that field, so make sure you choose something you like.
DANNY CAMPBELL
I would like some professional advice and guidance on my portfolio. This is only my third year shooting and I want to create an amazing body of work!

Well you definitely photographed one great body of work. Where is the rest? Is that all you did in 3 years?  Here's some advice - take more photos!

I'd like to get your feedback on my portfolio and website and your thoughts on spec shooting a piece for submission to magazines.

There seems to be some confusion with what you've uploaded onto your MWN profile and your actual website - love the stuff on your site. You should upload more of them onto your MWN portfolio. Most of the photos on your portfolio are of topless ladies yet your portfolio on your website is more fashion. I like your fashion photos - if you can shoot spec, do it. With money as tight as it is today, you should get your foot in the door.  Good luck!
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

MODEL OF THE MONTH:  EMMA HOLLEY

"In the past I've been asked to be in a music video, shoot with various photographers to help build their portfolios, and many other things unachievable by someone lacking time or creativity. I wanted a way to gather up everything and make myself accessible to anyone! Whatever visions or ideas you have, I can help make them reality. I have never declined a task and have never come across something out of my comfort zone. Please challenge me."

Who is your favorite photographer of all time?
Peter Lindbergh.
What inspires you?
People and their expression through fashion.
What kind of camera/equipment do you use?
5D Mark II with wireless grip and various lenses depending on what I'm shooting.
What is your personal style?
For myself, I prefer a relaxed style that incorporates a timeless look. Something that isn't trendy nor easily goes out of style.
What is your most embarrassing moment professionally?
Beginning a shoot with the lens cap on. That never gets old.

MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE MONTH:  DANIELLE MINNELLA

Why makeup artist?
I've been studying faces since I was a kid. I was always an artist. I oil painted many years ago and now my canvas is the human face.
What inspires you?
I love NYC and art. I'm inspired by architecture and bridges. I'm a people person and get inspired when I'm around happy and positive people.
What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?
Good skin and hair is most important.
What product can you not live without?
Sunscreen - the skin only looks as good as the skin and the sun ages with the skin. Sunscreen protects!
What is your favorite project you have worked on?
I recently worked with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman on a documentary. Two amazing stars! I was Mr. Redford's artist for the day.

ASK JOEY: Be Proactive!

So many people ask how they can get started in the industry. It's actually quite simple - be proactive! You aren't going to have agents knocking on your door to sign you. You need to make the initiative and go out and get your face out there. Meet with agencies, attend networking parties, talk to other models. The more people you know, the more you'll be able to get your name and face out there.  Check out the resources in front of you - MWN is a great tool to update your portfolio (network with photographers) and if you check out the ModelWire Fashion Directory, you can get a good start on which agencies to contact. Get out there and good luck!

I am trying to get on a good track in the industry and I'm seeking representation. If you don't mind reviewing my small portfolio, I would be grateful and open to any advice you have to give.

You definitely have a small portfolio but you have a good look.  Before you spend any money on pictures, go and see some agents.  I know I make it sound easy, but just keep calling and trying.  The agent that chooses you will work with you and build your portfolio and get you the jobs you need.  Get out there!

I am with Major in Milan and Mannequin in Singapore. I am currently looking for a new mother agency here in New York and I was wondering if you could refer me to one. Check out my blog - I am constantly updating it with a lot of photos and shows. Thank you!

You have a great look! Why don't you go with Major in NYC?  They have an excellent Men's Department.  If you are signed with an agency in a different region, they are more than likely to sign you with another region.  It would be a great start and Major is a good agency to be part of.  If not, I'm sure you would have no problems finding another agency - again, your look is amazing and you have the proper sizes and stats.

Do I have the look for high fashion based on the portfolio I have on MWN? Please critique my photos because I love hearing constructive criticism. I really would like your expertise and your help as I am pursing my career.

You have a great look and a good portfolio.  You just have to find the right agent.  Miami is a good place to start even if it's seasonal.  Otherwise, I would suggest going to New York and getting an agent there.  It comes down to personality - meet with agents and show it off.  People forget that sometimes.  You have to be someone that people will want to work with.
MICHAEL CEORGOVEANU
I read about what you do and I think it's great. I went into Ford and they said they would sign me if I was 18 and just starting out in the industry. My question for you is, do you think I could get signed with an agency and what agencies do you think would pick me up? Any tips or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I like your look but it's more commercial than high fashion. Find yourself a commercial agent - there are plenty in LA. Update your portfolio with more commercial-like photos. Try putting a shirt on in some of your photos. You need to be able to fit a commercial look which is everything from the beach to the office. You have a good look though so just keep at it!

If I want to model the latest styles in mens fashions and suits, what the best way to get the attention of a modeling agency? I ask this because I want to know if they are more interested in the International look as opposed to the domestic styles worn here in the States.

There's one thing to remember - YOU are the look.  The clothes do not make the man.  You have a nice look but you are more commercial than high fashion.  Make sure the clothes fit well in your portfolio photos, especially with suits.  Keep up to date with the latest in trends and make sure you showcase that knowledge in your portfolio photos. Agents are more interested in the model, not the clothes.
 In the meantime,

Have a successful day!
